LOOKING BACK; The Memories of a Comfort Woman
By JANE H. LII
Published: September 10, 1995

WEARING a skirt that covered her ankles and a Korean-style linen shirt, the old woman sat on a bamboo floor mat in her studio apartment in central Queens and told her story slowly. At first she was calm as she methodically peeled apples, apple pears and Korean white-fleshed peaches for the visitors. Her figure was erect, her eyes cast down, her ageless face stoic. But as she continued, her shoulders slumped toward her knees, and she curled up like a ball.

"I'm just waiting to die," the woman, D. Kim, said.

It was a bright fall day in 1944, she remembered, and the persimmon leaves were turning a shade of purple-red. She had become accustomed to living as part of a conquered people in the Japanese-occupied village of Ulsan in southern Korea. She was forced to take a Japanese name, speak Japanese in school and bow to Japanese soldiers whenever they passed and twice a day to the portrait of Emperor Hirohito that hung in her classroom.

But on this day, a Korean town clerk working for the Japanese Government and a Japanese policeman came to her home. She was now 16 years old, they said, and must go to the county office to join Jungshindae, the Women's Volunteer Labor Corps, to fight for the Emperor. She would be working in a military factory along with other patriotic women, and she would even be paid for her work, they said.

Her mother refused. But a few days later, the police came again. "My mother cried," she said. "I cried. She didn't want me to go." But this time they dragged her to the county office, where some 30 girls had been assembled. They were trucked to a military train nearby. For the next week, they endured a grueling trip across the Yalu River in a windowless boxcar lighted by candles. Japanese soldiers with bayonets stood on guard.

"I was scared during the trip," said Miss Kim, who insisted that her first name not be used and spoke through the translation of her lawyer, John H. Kim, who is not related. "We had no idea where we were going. I thought we were going to work at the military factory."

Miss Kim said she realized what was happening to her soon after she arrived in an army base in Qiqihar in Manchuria, in northern China, when a Japanese officer tried to rip off her clothes.

"I fought them during the first days," she said. "But they beat me so badly."

The new arrivals -- virgins -- were reserved for officers and became "comfort women," Miss Kim said. It was only after the officers were done with the women that the soldiers would get to them.

After arrival, each woman was given two blankets, one towel and a military uniform and settled in a barbed-wired wooden mess hall, which was divided into small cubicles with single-size mattresses on the floor. There, from 10 A.M to 10 P.M., she was forced to have sex with Japanese soldiers who lined up outside the hall. She served up to 50 soldiers a day, seven days a week.

"Often I had to spend the night with an officer," Miss Kim said. "Each soldier paid eight yen in military coupons. The Japanese keeper told us that the money would be given to us when we returned home."

Often, the women were trucked to military bases when the soldiers were stationed too far away to travel to "comfort stations."

Miss Kim said she tried to escape several times, but was caught and severely beaten by her captors. One night, she jumped off a truck. In addition to beating her, the angry soldiers tried to cut off her fingers with a knife, she said. She showed the scars.

In the "comfort stations," the women were frequently inspected by Japanese military doctors and were given shots for venereal diseases. "Sometimes I received the shots," Miss Kim said, her voice cracking as she sobbed uncontrollably. "I was bleeding. My body is completely ruined from the medication and the beatings I received."

ONE day in August 1945, Miss Kim awoke to find her Japanese captors gone. The war was over. The Japanese had surrendered. And the women had been abandoned, without the money they had been promised.

"I had mixed emotions," she said. "I was glad that the war was over. But I was so angry and ashamed about my situation."

With no place to stay, Miss Kim decided to return to Korea. Without a penny to her name, she began the long, two-month journey on foot. In Korea, she first settled near the American military base in Munsan, then in Pusan, living in shame, not wanting to disgrace her family. Some years later, she met her mother through an aunt. Her mother had invited her home, but she refused.

"What could I have done?" she asked. "I didn't want anybody to know."

It was decades before Miss Kim finally told her mother and her younger sister about her ordeal.

In 1979, at the invitation of the sister, who was living in New York, Miss Kim immigrated to America to forget her miseries and to live a life in anonymity.

Her ordeal had lasted one year. Her life was ruined forever. Miss Kim lives alone on Social Security disability checks and the generosity of her sister. She has few friends and receives virtually no visitors.

She carefully watches the efforts of Koreans who are suing Japan to get reparations for the comfort women. It was only in 1993 that Japan formally recognized its involvement in the forced prostitution. Mr. Kim, her lawyer, is part of a group that is fighting for the reparations, the Korean-American Coalition on Jungshindae. Last week, Korean officials raised the issue at the United Nations's women's conference in Beijing.

"Many nights I lay awake, awaiting my death," Miss Kim said, trembling from anger. "I could not erase those horrible images from my mind. How can they ignore me like this after trampling down on an ignorant, weak teen-ager to suffer for the rest of my life?"

Justice for Survivors of Japanese Military Sexual Slavery-- 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence (Nov 25 – Dec 10) Campaign 2010—Get Involved!

Background:
During the Asia-Pacific War (1932 – 1945), the Japanese military systematically forced some 200,000 women into sexual slavery through the development of military-run/overseen and military supplied brothels known euphemistically as “comfort stations.” For decades, surviv...ors have been fighting for full recognition and compensation from the Japanese government, but their demands have been met with lukewarm half-way measures that do not address the core of the issue. The survivors are very elderly, and now is the time to support them while they are still alive to receive a formal apology and reparations from the Japanese government.

16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence 2010 Support Campaign:

Please take a few minutes of your time to support women’s human rights throughout the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence (Nov 25 – Dec 10) and help us send a clear message to the Japanese government that there is no more time to lose in rectifying the ills of the past! Support the women’s movement in Asia as they make their presence known in Tokyo for two significant events:

Nov 25th (International Day Against Violence Against Women): On this day, activists from the Korean Council for Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan and surviving “comfort women” from South Korea will present extensive petitions to the Japanese Diet urging them to apologize officially and meet the demands of the elderly survivors while there is still time!

Dec 5th: 10th Anniversary Symposium of the Women’s International War Crimes Tribunal for the Trial of Japanese Military Sexual Slavery, a popular war crimes tribunal organized by women’s organizations in December of 2000. To this date, the Japanese government has not responded to the charges laid in this tribunal. Activists and survivors will gather to bring renewed momentum to the issue and to draw attention to the findings of this tribunal. (For more information on this, see here: http://tinyurl.com/34knug3 )

What we are asking you to do:
To support the survivors, take some time during the period of the 16 Days of Activism to…

• Contact your local Japanese consulate or embassy via email, fax, letter and phone to share your concern about this issue

• Visit the website of the Japanese Prime Minister and use the “contact us” form to send a message calling for the government to pass a formal resolution to meet the demands of the former “comfort women”. The survivors in Korea have been protesting on a weekly basis in front of the Japanese Embassy since 1992, with a list of seven demands (see sample letter below) that have not been fulfilled, even in part. Please let the Japanese government know that there is no more time to waste! Compose your own letter using the sample letter below. The website is here: http://www.kantei.go.jp/foreign/index-e.html and the direct link to the CONTACT US form can be found here: http://www.kantei.go.jp/foreign/forms/comment.html

• Encourage others to speak out: Email your associates, friends, family and all supporters of the “comfort women” and ask them to do the same. This “ripple effect” is crucial to making an impact. Let’s show the Japanese government that the global community stands behind the courageous survivors!

Statement:
To the Honorable Prime Minister of Japan, Naoto Kan:

I am writing during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence (Nov 25 – Dec 10) to express my grave concern that the Japanese government has still not issued a formal apology or met the demands of the former so-called “comfort women,” victims of Japanese wartime policy to mobilize and coerce thousands of women to provide sexual ‘entertainment’ for Japanese troops during the Asia-Pacific War (1932-1945). The surviving “comfort women” are in their 80s and 90s, and deserve to have their human rights recognized while they are still alive.

In December 2000, the Women’s International War Crimes Tribunal for the Trial of Japanese Military Sexual Slavery explored this issue from a legal perspective and found the Japanese government responsible for these crimes, naming war criminals and suggesting how to make amends. The findings of this tribunal, although read out in The Hague, have been largely ignored. It is time to consider the findings of this tribunal seriously and make amends.

The Japanese government must show its commitment to peace, reconciliation, gender equality and human rights by passing a bill that puts measures in place to officially meet the demands of the “comfort women”: acknowledgement of the crime of military sexual slavery; an official apology from the government; investigation and disclosure of the history; compensation to victims or their families; inclusion in textbooks; erection of monuments; and punishment of criminals involved in the system.
Many countries around the world, including the US, Canada, and the European Union, have passed resolutions urging this action, and now even some cities in Japan have passed similar resolutions. The time is now---the Japanese government must look the survivors in the eyes and take responsibility!

Sincerely,
Your name

Britain’s oldest known prostitute

Britain’s oldest known prostitute Sheila Vogel has blamed her granddaughter Katie Waissel for ruining her escort career.

The 82 year old was outed as a prostitute by The News Of The World in November last year and has since been cut off from her family. She was reportedly selling her services for £250 per hour from her sheltered accommodation in London and seedy occupation was only discovered because of her ties with Katie, who was at the time competing on ITV’s X Factor show.

Speaking on This Morning Sheila denied that she had ruined Katie’s chance of a successful career in the music industry, instead insisting that she has been more of a victim that her 24 year old granddaughter. When asked if she thought she had ‘disgraced’ the singer Vogel said:

‘No I don’t. I don’t, because this all started when Katie joined the X Factor.’

‘She went on, they went to the press…..’

Eamon Holmes tried to clarify her comments saying:

‘So rather than you affecting her and ruining her career, has she ruined your career?’

Sheila responded:

‘Yes absolutely. She has ruined my career. I’m afraid she has but I still wish her well and I love them all.

I love her. It breaks my heart to see my family to be split up like this. I just ask them not to be so judgemental to me.’

However even if her family do start speaking to her again, the sexy granny confessed that she won’t be giving up her nocturnal activities. She said:

‘That’s my private life and I don’t think my private life has anything to do with them.’

33 women raped in the Democratic Republic of Congo

At least 33 women were raped on New Year's Day in a region in the Democratic Republic of Congo, said the medical group Doctors Without Borders Thursday.

"Women had been restrained with ropes or beaten unconscious with the butt of a gun before being attacked, some in front of their children." said Annemarie Loof, the head of the medical aid organization's mission in the South Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

"Up to four armed men were involved at a time and homes and shops were looted," Loof added.

These alleged rapes come after reports from the United Nations that more than 200 people were systematically raped during rebel attacks in the summer of 2010 in the country.
